MODERN EDUCATION AND SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATIONS IN THE FIELD OF HUMAN PATHOLOGY
Volkova L.V.

Traditional education in pathology includes theoretical and practical skill teaching which is based on the examination of autopsy cases, biopsy specimens, macrospecimens and microscopic slides for diagnostics of pathological processes and diseases during training in the Medical University and postgraduate courses. At present there are new possibilities of education and scientific communications in human pathology:

  • methods of training by mean of modern technologies in pathology, such as digital microscopy and videomicroscopy, virtual slide box, distant interactive educational sessions - the new approach opens possibilities for professional contacts and network with experienced tutors and colleagues;
  • membership in the Russian and International Societies (Russian Society of Pathologists, European Society of Pathology, United States & Canadian Academy of Pathology) allowing closer professional contacts, participation in the international educational courses, Congresses and Conferences;
  • European School of Pathology with organization of different postgraduate courses and projects and possibilities of contacts with qualified specialists from different countries; scientific and educational programmes for experienced pathologists and young specialists;
  • international journals in the field of pathology (Virchows Archiv, Modern Pathology, Laboratory Investigations), accessible scientific papers and electron manuals, Medical Scientific Databases PubMed/MEDLINE;
  • different professional sites, educational portals with on-line presentations of clinical cases, typical and problem diagnostic situations, providing the methodical recommendations for using of the modern perspective methods and quality control organization for pathologists;
  • educational programme of the commercial companies, for example - 3DHISTECH Ltd. (Three-dimensional Histological Technologies), Definiens biomedical image and data analysis; webinars with possibility of on-line interconnections for pathologists in Europe and elsewhere;
  • on-line control of the level of professional training in the field of pathology - testing with including of images and clinical cases for diagnostics with participation of pathologists from different countries.

Pathological anatomy training in the Medical Institute of Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University in Kaliningrad includes not only traditional methods of teaching, the modern digital technologies are widely used - on-line distant testing, original Interactive System "Diagnostics" (Volkova L.V., 2012) for development of the diagnostic skills, creating the digital slides and subsequent examination in the Case Centre. Participation in the International Congresses and Conferences, professional contacts with high qualified investigators from specialized laboratories, interactive communications during on-line webinars, the mentioned new approaches and possibilities are very important for education and scientific interrelations without the borders in the field of human pathology.
